Hawthorn’s sole addition from the 2017 trade period, Jarman Impey is settling into his new club with ease. 

The former Port Adelaide utility sought a trade back to his home state at the end of the 2017 season, and was brought to Hawthorn in exchange for Pick 33. 

The change of scenery seems to have rejuvenated the 22-year-old, with Impey having impressed coaching staff at the club’s pre-season camp through his effort, comradery and intent out on the park. 

“I feel like I have a bit of new found energy since arriving at Hawthorn,” Impey said. 

“Obviously coming to a new club, you have to prove yourself, so I’ve just been working really hard and hoping it pays off. 

“I’m really enjoying training, particularly this week in New Zealand, and the off-field side of things has been good too, so it’s been a really smooth transition.”

While Impey says all his new teammates have been “really welcoming”, it is two of club’s most senior players who have helped the new Hawk out most.

“Shauny Burgoyne has taught me a fair bit since arriving at the club, particularly out on the training track.

“He’s always giving me little bits of advice which is really helpful.

“And Poppy [Paul Puopolo] has been great too. 

“I’ve been rooming with him here in New Zealand and he’s been really welcoming and really funny, so we get along well.”

But, the positive influence extends right through the playing group, with Impey thoroughly impressed by the calibre of leadership within the list.

“I really love what the young lads do in terms of leadership,” he said. 

“They’re all really passionate, they train really hard, and they set an extremely high standard and expectation, which is great for the team. 

“I can’t wait to be a part of it all in the season ahead.”
