Three Hawthorn players are on the verge of breaking into the club's top 10 goal kickers.
Luke Breust needs 16 goals. Cyril Rioli needs 47 goals. Jack Gunston needs 50 goals. Not completely unattainable in any given season, right?
If this trio are able to achieve the above tallies in 2018, they would join captain Jarryd Roughead inside the top ten all-time Hawthorn goal kickers.
This would make an astounding four current players a part of the Club’s ten greatest ever goalkickers - the most of any AFL club.
Excluding the expansion clubs (given their short existence in the league), the only clubs to have multiple active players in their top ten list are Adelaide, Port Adelaide, West Coast (three each) and Fremantle with two.
Yet it should be highlighted that West Coast is the ‘oldest’ of those four clubs, in its 20th season this year after a 1987 induction into the AFL, while Adelaide (1991), Fremantle (1995) and Port Adelaide (1997) followed thereafter.
Geelong and Richmond are the only original VFL clubs that have a current player within their top ten, being Tom Hawkins and Jack Riewoldt respectively.
Considering all of this, it makes the prospect of Hawthorn, entering its 84th year in the VFL/AFL, having four players inside the Club’s top ten greatest goal kickers incredibly impressive.
If Roughead can add 52 goals next year he will enter the top five, surpassing former teammate Lance Franklin who currently sits fifth.
While it's unlikely all four will occur within the one season, we can still hope, right?
