Ryan Schoenmakers played his 100th game in the Brown & Gold with Hawthorn’s Qualifying Final against Geelong in 2016.
His career has seen him develop from a raw young defender to a solid contributor at both ends of the ground and ultimately, a Premiership player. He becomes the 136th Hawk to play 100 games or more.
By reaching this milestone, Ryan is entitled to a place in the Museum’s popular They Played 100 Games or Moredisplay.
This exhibit, updated annually, lists each Hawthorn player who has achieved the feat, in order of games played.
Recruited from Norwood with selection 16 in the 2008 draft, Ryan’s journey to the marvellous 100 game milestone has not always been an easy one.
Injuries, including a torn ACL and fluctuations in form only served to bring out his determination.
He fought back to earn a place in the senior side as a versatile forward target and running defender.
Ryan is an effective mark and an accurate left-foot kick, abilities that led to his selection in the 2015 Premiership side following a strong showing in the finals.
He produced perhaps his finest game on Grand Final day, garnering 21 possessions including a goal and a towering mark on the wing. He required fortitude again in 2016 when further injury robbed him of game time.
Ryan was forced to endure a frustrating period between game 98 in Round 3 and number 99 in the final round of the Home & Away season. Fortunately, he recovered well and achieved his 100th game. He finished the season on 101 senior games for Hawthorn.
Hopefully, we will see Ryan in the Brown & Gold in many matches to come.
