Box Hill has appointed Melissa Kuys to captain the inaugural women’s side through its first VFLW season.
Kuys, fresh off an AFLW season with Collingwood, brings more than two decades of football experience to her new role. At 29 years old, the versatile ruck rover hopes to be able to impart some of her knowledge with her younger teammates.
“It’s an honour being named the first captain of the Box Hill women’s team,” says Keys.
“I hope I can be a good role model to the young girls coming through in our team.
“I just want to be able to share my footy knowledge, and help to teach them the right attitude early on.”
Having performed captaincy duties at various clubs over the past six years, Kuys is ready to embrace the challenges of captaining the newly-formed side.
“At every club, and even year by year, different challenges arise,” says Kuys.
“I know this year will be completely different again, and I’m really looking forward to it.”
“It’s such a good family environment down at training, and it’s fantastic to be aligned with the Box Hill men’s side and the Hawthorn Football Club.”
“I just can’t wait to get started.”
The Box Hill W team will play its first official game on Saturday 6th May, with the Hawks set to take on Geelong at Simmonds Stadium.
