Hawthorn veteran Shaun Burgoyne has been named captain of Australia’s International Rules squad for 2017.
The 35-year-old was chosen ahead of club captains Joel Selwood, Scott Pendlebury and Nat Fyfe.
The series, due to kick off on November 12th at Adelaide Oval, will mark Burgoyne’s second International Rules appearance, having played part in Australia’s 2008 side.
After going down by a mere five points nine years ago, Burgoyne will be hoping for his first taste of international success.
The four-time premiership star will be joined by other big names, including Patrick Dangerfield, Rory Sloane and teammate Jack Gunston, as Australia take on Ireland.
International Rules uses a compromised set of rules, inspired by both Gaelic Football and Aussie rules. The teams kick a circular football, traditionally used in Gaelic codes.
“I am lucky enough to have played International Rules once before, and as a junior as well, so I do remember a bit about kicking the ball,” Burgoyne said earlier this month.
