Alastair Clarkson will become the most experienced Hawthorn coach of all-time when he leads the Hawks this weekend for the 300th time.
With Clarkson breaking these new grounds on Saturday, we thought we would have a look at where our great coach sits against all of the other great coaches in the history of the game.
- While coaching at Hawthorn, only Allan Jeans (72.2% from 221 games) and Alan Joyce (72% from 93 games), who coached the Hawks through the golden era of the 1980s and early 1990s, have a superior winning percentage to Clarkson (62.5% from 299 games).
- But there is no past Hawthorn coach who can match Clarkson’s four premierships- Jeans and John Kennedy Snr are next in line with three flags each.
- Seven other coaches in the history of the game have won four premierships (Dick Reynolds, Tom Hafey, Ron Barassi, Allan Jeans, David Parkin, Kevin Sheedy and Leigh Matthews). While, in front of that peloton, is Jock McHale (eight premierships), Norm Smith (six), Jack Worrall and Frank Hughes (five each).
- Of all the coaches in the last 80 years, two current coaches Adelaide’s Don Pyke (72.5% from 40 games) and Geelong’s Chris Scott (72.2% from 158 games) have the greatest winning percentage.
- Clarkson will become the 21st man to coach 300 VFL/AFL games against Fremantle this Saturday.
- Two current coaches Gold Coast’s Rodney Eade (374 games) and Essendon’s John Worsfold (319) are a part of this 300-club.
- When Clarkson joins this prestigious group, he will have the best finals winning record of any other coach in that crowd.
- In fact, of all coaches that have coached at least 17 finals, Clarkson shares the best winning record with the great Norm Smith, both having won 16 finals from their 24 attempts.
- Mick Malthouse has coached more games than any other, with 718 games to his name across his time leading Footscray, West Coast, Collingwood and Carlton.
- By the end of this season, Clarkson will surpass Geelong’s Reg Hickey (304 games between 1932 and 1959) to break into the top 20 of all-time most games coached.
- Dan Minogue, who coached Richmond, Hawthorn, Carlton, St Kilda and Fitzroy over 362 games between 1920 and 1942, holds the record for coaching the most amount of teams with five.
- Current Fremantle and former St Kilda coach Ross Lyon has coached the most Grand Finals without ever bringing home a premiership medallion. He has reached four Grand Finals, albeit slightly misleading because of the 2010 Grand Final replay.
- Clarkson played 134 games in his time with Melbourne and North Melbourne, meaning he has been involved in 433 VFL/AFL matches. The leader in this category monsters that number though with Kevin Sheedy playing 251 games with Richmond, before coaching 678 games with Essendon and GWS for a combined total of an amazing 929 games.
