We're going through the alphabet one letter at a time categorising our Hawthorn players by not just their talent, but their surname too.

We have considered premierships, accolades, and the number of games played, to come up with a select and prestigious crop of Hawks from throughout history.

Colin Youren

Youren was a significant contributor to Hawthorn's first ever VFL premiership in 1961. Over an eight year career with the Hawks, the product of Scotch College in Melbourne developed a strong reputation with his pace and penetrative kicking from the wing position. Youren's 135 games for the club also included being in the losing side of the 1963 grand final. Youren was chosen to represent the state VFL side on five occasions.

Clinton Young

Clinton Young had very similar Hawthorn credentials to Youren. Also a highly-skilled wingman, he too played eight years in the brown and gold, while reaching two grand finals and winning one premiership medallion. Furthermore, Young only slightly shades Youren's game total, having played 137 games for the club. Having been drafted with pick 18 in the 2005 rookie draft, Young's career is a rare success story for those that have come from the rookie list.

Garry Young

Garry Young played for Hawthorn between 1956 and 1965, playing 108 games. Young, a teammate of Youren's, was the centre-half forward of the 1961 maiden Hawks premiership side. A strong-bodied goal kicker, Young led the club's leading goal scorers list on two occasions, 1959 and 1960. Young finished his career with 164 goals, averaging over a goal-and-a-half a game on his career.

Jack Zander

Jack Zander played 13 games for the Hawks in 1933 and 1934 and returned for a solitary game in 1937. Zander's first year in 1933 saw him kick 11 goals from his 11 games.

Harold Zucker

Harold Zucker played for one year at the Hawks in 1942. He kicked three goals from his three career games. Zucker held a poor win-loss record, having lost every game he played in.

Michael Zemski

Michael Zemski played eight games for the Hawks in his two years at the club, 1973 and 1974. Despite having six shots at goal across his career, Zemski only put one through the big sticks.
