HEAD of Development Academy Rob McCartney and Development Coach Chris Newman take a look at every Hawthorn-listed player's performance for Box Hill in Round 6.
The Hawks suffered a two-point defeat to Werribee on Sunday - their first loss of the season.
But there were still plenty of positives.
Kieran Lovell
“Kieran didn't the same influence on the game as previous weeks, but we were pleased that when the game was in the balance in the last quarter he took the game on with his leg speed and forward 50 entries. He still finished with 23 disposals." Rob McCartney (RM)
Matt Spangher
“It’s been a common theme with Spang throughout every game, he’s competed really well. He finds himself in a lot of one-on-one contests and rarely gets beaten. He got a bit of the ball, finishing with 16 disposals, and used the ball well. Sixteen possessions for a key back is a good return, and I’ve seen a steady improvement in his game each week.” Chris Newman (CN)
Marc Pittonet
“Pitto didn’t have the same influence around the ground as he had earlier in the year – he only took the one mark and this was a key part of his game in the early rounds. He still had 24 hit-outs and had an influence with his ruck work. We are looking for him to bounce back this week.” RM
Dallas Willsmore
“Again, Dallas found plenty of the footy, collecting 23 possessions – 16 kicks and seven handballs. He probably just didn’t have the same influence with ball in hand as he had in previous weeks – not as efficient and didn’t hurt the opposition by foot. His work-rate was still there, and he provided some good offensive spread for us.” RM
Angus Litherland
“Gus had his moments throughout the game. It was probably not the most dominant game he’s played, but he had a lot of moments where he impacted really well – some courageous efforts going back with the flight of the ball, and his defensive efforts were quite good.” CN
Lachie Langford
“Lachie didn’t have as much of the footy as in his debut, but what was really pleasing was Lachie’s defensive side – his pressure around the footy was really solid. He had three tackles and created some turnovers from frontal pressure. He had two shots on the weekend and missed them both – he needs to convert when he gets the opportunity.” RM
Jermaine Miller-Lewis
“Jermaine was down a little bit from previous weeks. He’s had a massive start to the year and been really important on the half back line, but he probably just didn’t influence the game as much offensively as he has been. Defensively his work-rate was still there, and he was quite aggressive with his defensive actions. He’s missed a couple of weeks, so he’ll be better for the run.” CN
Brendan Whitecross
“Whitey got some close attention – he was tagged – and probably didn’t find as much of the footy this week, with eight kicks and five handballs. But his pressure around the ball was really solid, and his effort demonstrated his commitment to fight through the tag. He’ll be determined to play a big one this week.” RM
Teia Miles
“Milesy was quite good, if it hadn’t been for his inaccuracy in front of goal (1.4) it would have been an outstanding game – if it wasn’t already. He used the ball really well, but the best thing about Milesy is he creates instability with the opposition defence –when he gets the ball, his work-rate offensively is huge. He’s a real weapon for us.” CN
Kade Stewart
“Kade continues to contribute each week. He had 11 kicks and four handballs. He backed this up with eight tackles – and again demonstrated he can take a contested mark and can be dangerous around goal. It was a really solid performance from a first-year player. He kicked an important last quarter goal… playing on from a mark to put us within striking distance.” RM
Blake Hardwick
“Along with Stewy, his pressure around the footy is elite. He didn’t get as much of the ball in our forward half this week – collecting many of his 12 possessions higher up the ground. He’s got a really good balance between his contested and uncontested ball… and again demonstrated he can hit the scoreboard with his goal in the third quarter.” RM
Kurt Heatherley
“I thought Kurt was outstanding for us, just in winning the ball back. He had six marks off oppo boot, which is great. In previous weeks he’d been frustrated with not being able to impact as much as what he would have hoped, so this week he had a focus on working hard behind the ball and getting to every contest he could. He found himself in the right spots and ended up with 11 marks and 18 disposals, which his great for a key defender. He continues to use the ball well.” CN
Jack Fitzpatrick
“Jack unfortunately was concussed midway through the third quarter and had no further involvement in the game. The highlight of his game this week was his ruck work – he was able to get his hand on the ball (12 hit outs) at the stoppages and often was able to palm it to areas that gave our mids first use. At times he looked dangerous up forward but we probably just needed more out of him in terms of impact on the scoreboard.” RM
