THERE were plenty of interesting statistical takeaways from Hawthorn’s grand final rematch win against West Coast Eagles on Sunday.

Let’s start with this.

The Hawks’ winning margin – 46 points – was the same in Round 2 as it was in last year’s grand final.

And it was exactly six months between matches, from October 3 to April 3.

From a team perspective, the Hawks held sway in a number of key areas.

The Hawks won the disposal count by a whopping 165, collecting 458 disposals to the Eagles’ 293. It was the team’s highest disposal count since Round 9 last year, against Gold Coast Suns at Aurora Stadium.

The Hawks’ disposal dominance led to a significant inside-50 advantage, with the Hawks’ doubling the Eagles’ tally of 34 inside 50s for the match.

Surprisingly, the Hawks also had more tackles – laying 89 to the Eagles’ 81. And on the subject of tackles, Will Langford is equal first in the AFL after two rounds with 19 tackles – 11 of which were laid against the Eagles.

Moving onto individual stats, and a couple of Hawks enjoyed career-best disposal tallies.

Josh Gibson was one – racking up a phenomenal 44 disposals, bettering his previous PB of 36. His tally equalled the club record for disposals in a match. And adding to that, he spent 100 per cent of the game on the ground.

Billy Hartung also bettered his PB, collecting 32 disposals, as did James Sicily with a career-best four goals in just his fifth match.

For the seventh consecutive game, dating back to Round 23 last season, Sam Mitchell polled more than 30 disposals.

He racked up 37 against the Eagles on Sunday – meaning he’s averaging more than 35 disposals per game in his last four against West Coast – and his past seven games look like this: 34 disposals, 35, 33, 35, 34, 36, 37.

Mitchell is leading the competition for disposals so far this season with 73, followed by teammate Josh Gibson with 68.

And on the subject of Josh Gibson, his goal on the weekend was just the third of his career – but more importantly, his first as a Hawk.

It came in his 127th game in the brown and gold – after three premierships, two club best and fairest awards and an All Australian Guernsey.
