HAWTHORN's James Sicily is the 2016 NAB AFL Rising Star nominee for Round 13.
Sicily received his nomination for a match-winning five-goal performance in Friday night’s match against North Melbourne at Etihad Stadium.
The 21-year-old has enjoyed a breakout season in his third year as a Hawk.
Sicily made his AFL debut in 2015, playing three senior games, after being recruited from Keilor FC and TAC Cup side Western Jets with pick 56 in the 2013 NAB AFL Draft.
He has established himself as a regular in Hawthorn’s side this season, playing in each of the club’s 13 games.
Playing predominantly as a forward – but with some time in defence – the strong-marking Sicily has kicked 19 goals and averaged 11.8 disposals and five marks per game.
He has kicked three or more goals in three games this season.
Sicily kicked four majors in the Hawks’ Round 2 grand final rematch against West Coast Eagles, before following up with three goals – including the match-winner – against 2015 finalists, the Western Bulldogs, a week later.
Last week, Sicily collected a career-high 25 disposals playing in defence against Essendon, and after starting in defence against the Roos on Friday night, the emerging talent pushed forward to finish with a career-best five straight goals.
Hawthorn coach Alastair Clarkson said Sicily has made a solid contribution so far in 2016.
“We have been pleased with James’ development. His most natural position is in the front half, but he’s also been playing down back over the last few weeks and adding another string to his bow.
“Our depth is a great feature of our club and it is pleasing to see our younger players, including James, taking their opportunities at a senior level.”
Sicily is the Hawks’ first NAB AFL Rising Star nominee since Billy Hartung, who received his nomination in Round 7 last year.
Two Hawks have won the award in past seasons – Nick Holland in 1995, and current Hawk Sam Mitchell, in 2003.
