HAWTHORN’S belief in its ability to get the job done did not waver at three quarter time against the Western Bulldogs, says midfielder Liam Shiels.
Shiels, who returned from a wrist injury for the match, said despite trailing by 19 points at the final change, the Hawks had full confidence in their ability to reverse the scoreline.
“We really stepped it up in the last quarter,” Shiels told hawthornfc.com.au after the match.
“We were very disappointed with the third quarter, but to come away with the win was a pretty special feeling and to see a young fella like James Sicily kick the winning goal is pretty exciting.
“There is an enormous amount of belief amongst the group that we can come from behind and win games like this.
“We needed to take the game on a little bit – we hadn’t played great for the middle two quarters. We had to throw a bit of caution to the wind… There was a massive belief that we could win the game from three goals down.”
After missing the Hawks’ first two matches of 2016, Shiels slotted back into the side with ease, picking up 18 disposals to go with three clearances, four tackles and four inside 50s.
“I started okay, I was a bit scratchy in the second half when the legs pulled up a little bit,” Shiels said.
“It was good to get a game under the belt, the wrist felt good and we’ll move onto next week.”
