It was a season of mixed fortunes for Jonathan O’Rourke, who played seven AFL games in his second season at Waverley after leaving GWS at the end of 2014.
The former number 2 draft pick started the season in the AFL side due to injuries to fellow midfielders, before suffering a hamstring injury which sidelined him for three weeks.
O’Rourke returned to Hawthorn’s AFL team later in the season, playing four-consecutive games from Round 17 to Round 20.
His form at VFL level was promising throughout the year, and was never far away from putting his hand up for selection in the senior side.
The upcoming pre-season looms as an important time for O’Rourke in trying to establish himself in the Hawthorn outfit going into 2017.
A word from: Damian Carroll
“Jono played seven games for the season after playing just two the previous season, so it was good that he could get some exposure in the side.
“He also had a couple of injuries along the way which saw him miss football at AFL and VFL level.
“We saw glimpses of Jono’s skill set, speed and endurance and we’re just looking for more when he continues to get opportunities at our footy club to be both an inside and outside midfielder and to impact the contest more consistently throughout games.
“But we did see some improvements and signs this year that he can be a really good AFL footballer for us.”
