It’s 2017. The Hawks have plenty of talented young players who will be looking to become regular fixtures in the Hawthorn side this year.
So, who might we expect to shine?
We’ve put the spotlight on five players with under six years in the AFL system who will be hoping for a breakout year with the Hawks this year.
5 to keep in mind: Teia Miles
Name: Teia Miles
Age: 20
Guernsey: 42
Senior games (2016): 0
Senior games (career): 0
Drafted: Pick no. 49, 2014 NAB AFL Draft.
Teia Miles enjoyed another successful season at Box Hill and will likely continue to stake his claim for AFL selection in the 2017 season.
In 2016…
Miles was one of the most consistent players for the VFL side in 2016. He was recognised for his efforts, finishing third overall in Box Hill’s best and fairest award.
Unfortunately Miles suffered a setback late in the season, breaking his collarbone in Box Hill’s Round 18 win, just as he was pushing for AFL selection. The injury kept him side-lined for the remaining three matches.
Miles will be with the Hawks until the end of 2018, after signing a contract extension one week before his season-ending injury.
“I think I’ve been consistent for most of the year and I’m hoping I can break into the AFL team one day, either this year or over the next couple of years,” said Miles in August.
Where could he slot in?
Miles offers plenty of flexibility, with the ability to play both defensive and forward roles.
The half-back line is his bread and butter, but with personnel like Ben Stratton, Josh Gibson and Grant Birchall fit and healthy, Miles may find himself slotting in somewhere else in the starting line-up.
