THE Box Hill Development League side broke their run of four-straight grand final losses on Sunday as they accounted for the Casey Scorpions by a massive 105 points.
Going into the game as heavy favourites after finishing three games clear on top of the ladder at the end of the home-and-away season, the Hawks were never troubled after dominating the first half.
A seven-goal-to-one opening term set the scene for the victory, with Box Hill having the game in hand at half time with a lead of 63 points.
The withdrawal of Hawthorn-listed player Matt Spangher had little bearing on the result, with the 2014 AFL premiership player not taking the field after Hawthorn were beaten by the Western Bulldogs on Friday night.
Anthony Brolic (28 disposals and six goals) and Will Murphy (22 disposals) were among the Hawks’ best on the day, with Murphy named the best player on the ground in an emphatic win.
Speaking to boxhillhawks.com.au post-match, Murphy said previous grand final defeats had stuck in the minds of the playing group.
“It is an unbelievable feeling and there are really no words to describe it,” he said.
“Especially after last year’s Grand Final against Williamstown, it’s just the best feeling.
“A lot of the guys who were a part of the loss last year still felt that today, but there was never any doubt in our minds today that we would walk away winners if we just stuck to our brand of footy.”
Hawthorn-listed rookie Lachie Langford, the brother of 2014 Hawthorn premiership player Will, kicked two goals in the win while Irish rookie Connor Glass also booted a goal.
