HAWTHORN premiership player Matt Spangher will play with the Box Hill Development side in their semi-final tomorrow as he continues to push his case for a recall to the AFL side in September.

Spangher has missed a large chunk of the season with injury, initially struggling with calf issues in the pre-season before hurting his hamstring in his only AFL appearance for the year in Round 10 against Brisbane.

The key position utility is beginning to build match fitness and has played at VFL level in the last two weeks, including an 11-disposal game against Casey last week which included five marks and two goals.

He has also qualified at VFL Development level to ensure he could continue playing after Box Hill missed the VFL finals, in the hope of playing in September with Hawthorn.

Development coach Chris Newman told hawthornfc.com.au earlier in the week that the 2014 premiership player looked as though he had put his injury troubles behind him.

“He’s moving really well at the moment and his body looks really strong which is a good sign,” Newman said.

Spangher will be joined by Hawthorn-listed rookies Conor Glass and Lachlan Langford in the Box Hill Development side, which finished three wins clear on top of the ladder.

The Hawks take on the Casey Scorpions at 11am at Casey Fields.
