1. Good luck, defenders
It’s hard not to genuinely feel for the poor defenders who have to play on Paul Puopolo and Cyril Rioli each week.
Again the duo combined for five goals against the Power – and 11 tackles – proving their ability to hit the scoreboard and create manic pressure.
But you can’t just be on your toes at ground level, with both small forwards soaring high in the sky – both sitting on the head of Power backman Matthew Broadbent.
2. The best of Shaun Burgoyne
This great man probably flew under the radar on Thursday night.
But Shaun Burgoyne was one of the most influential players on the ground, winning 17 disposals and laying 10 tackles, stepping up to the challenge in the most high-pressure moments.
In the big games this year, Burgoyne has continued to stand tall.
3. Big men dominant, Hawks win clearances
Jonathon Ceglar and Ben McEvoy dominated in the air against the Power.
The Hawks’ ruck duo won the hit-out count 55-24, setting up their side’s midfield success - particularly in a brilliant patch to start the third term.
Controlling the air at the stoppages made it easier for the Hawks to win the clearance count – 41 to 33 – with Cyril Rioli (eight), Sam Mitchell (seven), Luke Hodge (seven) and Jordan Lewis (six) taking full advantage.
4. Hodgey making a statement?
Hawthorn’s skipper has been prolific since returning from his knee/hand injuries, producing two brilliant games of football.
Luke Hodge backed up his dominant performance against Gold Coast Suns with a 29-disposal, 10-mark, seven-clearance performance against the Power.
With ‘The General’ in fine form two months out from the finals, it’s a great sign for the Hawks.
5. Now it’s time for the big one…
Alastair Clarkson put it on the Hawks to take a stand against Port Adelaide – which they did.
But this Thursday night is an even bigger challenge.
The Hawks have lost matches to fellow contenders Geelong, GWS Giants and Sydney Swans – and a win against the Swans this time around would shore up their chances of a top-two finish.
