BOX HILL Hawks coach Marco Bello, Hawthorn head of development academy Rob McCartney and Hawthorn development coach Chris Newman evaluate every Hawthorn-listed player's performance at VFL level in Round 11.
The Hawks’ VFL affiliate started well against Geelong Cats, but couldn't maintain their form across the match, going down by 49 points at Simonds Stadium on Sunday.
However, there were a number of impressive performers for Box Hill Hawks.
ZAC WEBSTER
“That was Zac’s third game back at VFL level and it was probably his best game. We’re starting to see the glimpses of his dynamic, explosive movements that we know he’s capable of. He really hit the contest and the body hard. He had 11 disposals and was nice and clean, plus he had four tackles – so his defensive side, which has always been a strong suit, was noticeable. I think we’ll see the best of Zac over the next few weeks.” – Rob McCartney
MARC PITTONET
“Pitto competed really well. He was the ‘lone ranger’ again as our only genuine ruckman in the side, and he had to compete against three 200-centimetre-plus players in Lucey, Vardy and Clark. I thought Pitto did an admirable job, especially in the ruck department where he had 34 disposals. His second and third efforts post the hit-outs were also good – he had six tackles, three clearances and 11 disposals – it was a step up for him.” – Marco Bello
KURT HEATHERLEY
“Kiwi was probably the standout defender on the day. He ended up with 22 disposals – so that’s two weeks in a row he’s been able to accumulate over 20 possessions, which is a great asset to have as a big unit. He took 10 marks, which was also a highlight. His ability to read the ball and take marks off oppo boot is really important for our game. A lot of his contested work was really good too.” – Chris Newman
BRENDAN WHITECROSS
“Whitey played a number of different roles. He started forward, spent some time in the midfield and also spent some time back. It was that sort of a game – we were plugging holes at times and Whitey was the guy we used as our ‘Mr Fixit’. He finished the day with 17 disposals and seven marks – and he played on from each of those marks. It’s good to see Whitey trying to take the game on, look for some inside kicks and try to open the ground up for us. One thing Whitey gives us every week is his hardness with his defensive pursuits.” – Rob McCartney
ANGUS LITHERLAND
“Gus tried really hard on the day. He finished with 13 disposals, but the best thing about his game was probably his tackles – he finished with five or six tackles, which was good a good result, and six rebounds, so he was important for us in generating offensive ball.” – Chris Newman
KIERAN LOVELL
“Kieran was able to get his hands on the footy. He finished with 25 disposals and he started the game off really well with seven disposals. He had five clearances and provided a really good energy around the stoppages. We were also pleased with his defensive acts as well – it was an all-round game from Kieran.” – Marco Bello
JERMAINE MILLER-LEWIS
“Jermaine finished with 12 disposals, but the thing we love about Jermaine is his aggressive nature. He’s a physical player, he thrives on the contest and provided a few good passages of play with his rebound. Jermaine’s building his game and we look forward to what he can bring against Port Melbourne this week.” – Chris Newman
BLAKE HARDWICK
“There was definitely some real energy and intent in Dimma’s game this week. It was really noticeable that he was trying to drag his opponent a little deeper and utilise his aerial skills... especially in the second quarter, where he took a couple of marks and had two shots on goal. He ended up having 13 possessions, but faded a little in the last quarter. We just need to get a bit of consistency throughout the game with Dimma, but there’s some really good signs – the five marks and his ability to be dangerous in our forward half.” – Rob McCartney
KAIDEN BRAND
“Kaiden started the game back and had a reasonable start. It was a really good contest to see him play against Mitch Clark, who is obviously a pretty dominant forward when he gets going. It was good exposure for Kaiden to play on him. He ended up going forward and in the ruck in the second half, so it’s about adding strings to his bow and trying him in different positions.” – Chris Newman
WILL LANGFORD
“Will came back to us this week, and it was great to have someone of his calibre, with his leadership and ability to win the footy in tight. He started off the game really well with nine disposals. He was important around the clearances, winning six, and similarly to Kieran (Lovell), he influenced the game on the defensive end with seven tackles. It was pleasing that he was able to get through the game and contribute – especially in the first half.” – Marco Bello
TEIA MILES
“Milesy finished with 18 disposals, he provided some pretty good drive for us offensively in the first half, but then we threw him forward in the second half to add something different to his game. He has the ability to play at both ends and he had a reasonable impact when he went forward. He certainly provides something different for us when he goes forward.” – Chris Newman
