1. Hawks find a way
As has been the case on a number of occasions in 2016, the Hawks found a way.
Just like the week before against Brisbane Lions – albeit in completely different conditions – the match was in the balance for three-and-a-half quarters, before the Hawks found another gear.
The Hawks held the Dees goalless in the final term and kicked three to get across the line.
2. Young talent steps up
The Hawks’ young players lifted – not the first time this year – when the game was in the balance.
Tim O’Brien and debutant Kade Stewart kicked pivotal final quarter goals, Daniel Howe relished the wet conditions and James Sicily floated between attack and defence to have an impact.
3. Gibson, Gunston deliver in milestone matches
Josh Gibson and Jack Gunston have been two of the Hawks’ most consistent contributors in 2016, and they delivered again in their 200th AFL game and 100th club game respectively.
Gibson was his typical self in defence – effecting an equal game-high 10 one-percenters – while Gunston kicked three goals before half time and soldiered on despite an ankle knock late in the game.
4. Tackle kings
Hawthorn set a new tackle record for 2016, laying 109 against the Demons, although that total was then bettered by Sydney Swans (135) and Gold Coast Suns (119) later that night.
Four players hit double figures in the tackle count – Liam Shiels (11), Cyril Rioli (11), Shaun Burgoyne (10) and Paul Puopolo (10) – while youngsters Daniel Howe (nine) and Kade Stewart (nine) were both fierce with their attack on the opposition.
The Hawks are the competition’s number two ranked tackling team after 11 rounds.
5. Mitchell fires
Sam Mitchell doesn’t have too many quiet weeks.
The veteran midfielder was influential in the Hawks’ win against the Dees, finishing with 27 disposals, eight inside 50s, seven tackles and four clearances.
While conditions didn’t allow for the prettiest of matches, Mitchell’s ability to scrap and scrounge around the contest – alongside Jordan Lewis and a number of other Hawks – was pivotal to the result.
