It took until Round 22 last year for the Hawks to finally break through the 100-point threshold.
But statistics, albeit from a small sample size, would suggest the side's ability to score is in for a strong rise in 2020.
Champion Data analyst Daniel Hoyne revealed on SEN on Wednesday the Hawks played a dramatically different style of footy in their first Marsh Community Series game against St Kilda.
“This is extreme. If we have a look at what Hawthorn did against St Kilda on the weekend; they went through the corridor when exiting defensive 50 46 per cent of the time,” he said on SEN Breakfast.
"This is compared to last year's 16 per cent - a 30 per cent increase in one game.
“Their mark to play-on rate in the back half of the ground was 41 per cent. Last year it was 31 per cent.
“They’re extreme numbers from one sample, so it’ll be really interesting to see what they do in the next Marsh Series game.”
Fans are always cautious of reading too much into pre-season form but Hoyne said historically, teams that shift as much as Hawthorn have tended to follow through with it once premiership points are on the line.
“We have to be a little bit cautious that it is just one Marsh Series game, but there has been evidence over time that when a team significantly changes what they’re doing in the Marsh Series as compared to what they did the year before, that actually goes through to the season. But it has to be significant."
