Hawthorn superstar Shaun Burgoyne says there was a deafening noise surrounding the club’s game against the Lions on Sunday, despite there being no one in the stands.

Burgoyne was arguably the best player on the ground as the Hawks defeated the Lions by 28 points, but the 37-year-old conceded it was a game like any other of his distinguished career.

“It was obviously a strange feeling, you had to create your own energy and your own excitement, and we spoke about that leading into the game,” Burgoyne said.

“You can’t shut the noise out because it’s happening across the world, but we thought we’re in a safe environment for two hours so let’s just focus in and do what we can do.

“I’m super excited we got to play one game and get a win.

“It’s pretty funny to watch the boys celebrating and cheering out to the empty stands but it’s a strange, strange feeling.”

Burgoyne said Sunday’s game was the first time in his 220 appearances in the brown and gold that he played as a full-time forward.

But, having spent much of the early part of his career with Port Adelaide stationed in attack, he said that he loved the blast from the past.

“It’s a new role for me this year, I’ve trained there the whole pre-season with the aim of trying to spread the load up there.

“It was good to play my role and kick a few goals.”
