So often in games of footy, coaches are confronted with the dilemma.

"We desperately need to win this clearance, who are we putting into the midfield to ensure it?"

Whether it be towards the end of a tight game or perhaps simply to wrestle back some momentum, there have been a number of players throughout Hawthorn's history who could be relied on to will the ball forward at key moments.

Arguably the greatest player the game has ever seen, Lethal revelled in the big moments and would have relished the challenge of winning the hard ball and pushing it forward. Leigh would be hard to leave out of your mix. 

Sam Mitchell

He once had 18 clearances in a game, Mitchell never had an issue finding the ball and then propelling it the Hawks way. Does he get your vote? 

Tom Mitchell

Only Brett Ratten's campaign in 1999 topped Tom's 192 clearances in 2018 when he averaged an incredible eight clearances per game. If you do the maths, Tom stacks up, doesn't he?
