The late change just got later.
For the remainder of this season, teams will be able to name their final line-ups 60 minutes before a game starts, no longer needing to file their starting sides 90 minutes before the first bounce.
AFL.com.au has confirmed the league has made the decision to give clubs an extra half an hour to finalise their selected sides as a result of the change to matchday travel this year.
Clubs, like North Melbourne and Essendon in round two heading to Sydney, will be flying interstate on the day of a game, so the AFL has allowed them another 30 minutes to settle on their line-ups before they are officially revealed.
Stratton on Jaeger, Geelong and mental preparation
The move to streamline match-day logistics will have clubs guessing about their opponents' final sides until the final hour before play begins.
Plenty of mystique surrounds the submission of the final teams before games, with injury clouds often hovering over players from each club and some clubs using the late change as a tactical manoeuvre.
Geelong is one club that has become renowned for swinging late changes when final teams are submitted pre-match, including in last year's qualifying final loss to Collingwood.
Cats coach Chris Scott said he made the late call to replace ruckman Rhys Stanley for Sam Menegola due to weather conditions.
However Stanley said in the days after the defeat that he had found out at the club's final training session he was going to be a late out.
