HAWTHORN is hoping to trade earlier into the draft, Recruiting and List Manager Graham Wright says.
The Hawks’ first selection is currently number 43 after completing a trade for GWS midfielder Jonathan O’Rourke, which saw the Club give up it’s first round pick to the Giants, number 19 overall.
The trade also involved the swapping of picks, with Hawthorn giving up pick 40 for GWS’s number 43.
With key big men Sam Grimley and Luke Lowden looking for opportunities at rival clubs, Wright says any potential trades would more than likely focus around picks rather than players.
“We’d like to be back in (the draft) a little bit earlier,” Wright told NAB Trade Radio.
“That might be dictated by other people and what they’re after and what they want.
“We’ll just have to sit back now and see how that plays out for us over the next week.”
The Hawks could also trade back into the draft earlier through key position player Ryan Schoenmakers and midfielder Mitch Hallahan.
The pair have stated, however, they’d prefer to stay at Hawthorn despite interest from opposition teams.
After adding unrestricted free agent defender James Frawley and midfielder O’Rourke and despite being focused on draft picks rather than players the Hawks are keeping their options open.
“Once you enter into these trade periods you have to be really open minded because things move and change,” Wright said.
“At this stage, I think it’d be about picks for us but we’d be open minded too if something was there that we wanted to get into.”
