Coincidentally, Hawthorn last played St Kilda after having just played Richmond at the MCG, only this time the Hawks were looking to bounce back against the Saints after their Round 19 loss to the Tigers.
It was a game that never really reached any great heights but Hawthorn put the result beyond doubt with a five goal to one second quarter.
The Hawks were inaccurate for most of the game and their five second quarter goals would have been more had it not been for the inability to convert a myriad of opportunities inside 50. For the quarter, the Hawks kicked 5.10 and finished with 14.18 for the night.
Without spearhead Lance Franklin up forward, the Hawks found other avenues to goal, led by eventual Coleman Medal winner, Jarryd Roughead who booted five and Jack Gunston two.
But the most dominant player on the ground for Hawthorn was actually a player who now wears red, white and black – Shane Savage. His run from the midfield and frantic tackling were the highlights of his 30 disposal game.
Taylor Duryea also impressed in defence in his role in restricting St Kilda to just seven goals for the night as well as key defensive talls Josh Gibson and Brian Lake who rotated on Saints skipper Nick Reiwoldt. The pair held him to just 1.3 for the night.
For St Kilda, Leigh Montagna was their best player with 35 disposals and four clearances, while Adam Schneider was their most dangerous and accurate forward with three goals.
Jack Steven was also good in the midfield with his pace able to break the lines on the way to 33 disposals and Farren Ray had 30 possessions.
