Hawthorn last met Melbourne in Round 10 last year, when they triumphed by 95 points at the MCG.

It was a clinical performance by the Hawks, who won each of the key stats including disposals, clearances, contested possessions and inside 50s.

The Hawks put the game to bed in the second term by booting nine goals to one after keeping the Demons goalless in the opening term.

Hawthorn didn’t stop there either, piling on 11 goals to five in the second half to run away with a convincing win.

Hawthorn’s midfield was outstanding against the young Demons, racking up almost 100 more possessions for the game (419-329), with Brad Sewell the best with 31 disposals, eight inside 50s and five clearances.

The Hawks had nine players reach 20 disposals or more, while Sewell was the lone player on the ground with 30 or more as the Demons could manage over five players with 20 or more.

Luke Breust was excellent up forward with five goals, while Jarryd Roughead booted three as the Hawks shared the goals around, with 11 individual goal kickers.

For the Demons, Chris Dawes impressed up forward with 21 disposals, 12 marks and a goal, while Nathan Jones carried the midfield with a team-high 28 touches  and 11 clearances.
What the coaches said

Hawthorn’s Alastair Clarkson: "There was some good pressure from our players right across the field that forced Melbourne into a lot of errors, and didn’t allow them to get the scoring opportunities that perhaps they would have liked, particularly early in the game.

"It was good to get some scoreboard pressure and really limit the opportunities they had in their front half."

Melbourne’s Mark Neeld: “We’re not happy to get beaten by 90-odd points but it’s an interesting wash-up because we went in with some targets and focus areas (that we achieved).”
