Hawthorn Football Club proudly launched the release of Playing to Win on Wednesday, the behind-the-scenes story of the Club's eleventh premiership.

Written by journalist Michael Gordon, Playing to Win goes inside the inner sanctum of the Hawks from 2009 to 2013, revealing a number of highs and lows, stories and the journey that eventually led to the 2013 triumph.

The Club welcomed Legends John Kennedy Snr and David Parkin to the launch as well as Club greats such as Graham Arthur and Peter Knights who led a panel interview with President Andrew Newbold, CEO Staurt Fox, Coach Alastair Clarkson, Captain Luke Hodge and Gordon.

Fox said the book is a great inside look at the Club as it achieved the ultimate success in 2013.

"For members and supporters, you should get out and have a look at this book and have a good read of it because it really is a great reflection of a five year journey. It shares every up and down, every bump along the way was a very accurate reflection of what happened in the last five years," he told hawthornfc.com.au

Newbold said the book gives a great insight into the inner workings of Hawthorn.

"Part of our brand is that we're the family club and I think it's appropriate that people get to see the values that we live by and hopefully they can be as proud as I am of the Hawthorn Football Club. I think this book lets you have a look at how we go about things," he said.

Clarkson's coaching philosophies and strategies are revealed in the book along with different ways he aimed to inspire his players his pre-match addresses.

He said drawing on real-life examples is the best way to connect with this group of players.

"We try to make life in our footy club as real as it possibly can be so we bring out real life examples of our own players, my life and other coaches' lives plus contemporary events going on around us," he said.

"We find that that really helps to engage our players and helps them focus on what needs to be done on any given Saturday."
