Despite losing Lance Franklin before the game to injury, Hawthorn powered to a 54-point win over Port Adelaide at AAMI Stadium the last time the two teams met, in Round 16 last year.

In the absence of Franklin, Jarryd Roughead and Jack Gunston stepped up to lead the Hawks to victory, each booting five goals in a dominant performance from the Hawthorn forward line.

The Hawks were in control of the game from the outset, booting six goals to two in the opening term before the Power snatched the momentum and the crowd became a factor thanks to a six goal to two term from the home team.

But the Hawks steadied in the second half and booted nine goals to four to storm to victory and silence the hostile AAMI Stadium crowd.

This game was the first of a long stretch of outstanding performances from midfielder Isaac Smith, who picked up three Brownlow votes for his outstanding 26 disposal, nine tackle and three goal performance.

Captain Luke Hodge was also outstanding playing mostly in the midfield, also picking up 26 touches, six clearances and a goal.

Hodge, Smith, Sam Mitchell, Jordan Lewis and Shane Savage were outstanding in a midfield that won the battle against their Port Adelaide counterparts and won the clearances 43-31, although they were beaten in the contested possessions.

The Hawthorn midfield also generated 10 more inside 50s for the game, which translated into 10 more scoring shots for the Hawks.

In defence, Josh Gibson and Brian Lake were outstanding in restricting the influence of Jay Schulz who managed just one goal for the game, while Brent Guerra was also among the best with 20 tocuhes off half back.

For the Power, skipper Travis Boak was best with 34 disposals, seven inside 50s and four clearances, while Brad Ebert had 27 possessions and three clearances.

Angus Monfries proved dangerous up forward, kicking two goals and had 15 touches.
