Hawthorn eventually broke away from a persistent Collingwood in Round 14 this season, when the two teams last met.
With Brendon Bolton at the helm in the absence of Alastair Clarkson and the game delicately placed at half time with the Hawks leading by just nine points, it was a 10 goal to seven second half that helped the Hawks secure a 29-point victory.
The Hawks eventually wore the young Pies down with pressure around the ball but it was the difference in ball use from the two sides in particular that told the story.
As Collingwood wasted chances up forward, the Hawks were precise in their ball movement to hit up forward targets and make the most of their opportunities.
Veteran midfielder Brad Sewell turned back the clock with 26 disposals and a goal in his best performance of the season, but it was the performance of Luke Breust up forward that earned best on ground honours from the coaches in the aftermath.
A difficult match-up for the Pies, Breust kicked two goals in quick succession in the opening term that stamped his authority on the match before finishing with 20 disposals and four goals.
For the Pies, they were again led by gun forward Travis Cloke who was a handful for the returning Brian Lake with five goals, while Scott Pendlebury was outstanding in the midfield with 35 possessions.
What the coaches said
Hawthorn’s Brendon Bolton: "It was good to see 'Sewelly' put another one on the board – two in a row.
"This is a brutal, tough competition and he was a little bit slow to get going, but we always knew he would be.
"He's proud and determined and I think [the motivation] is more from within than external."
Collingwood’s Nathan Buckley: "We presented well for most of the first three quarters, but I didn't like the way we played in the last quarter.
"We were too slow with the ball from our back half, and there were a few structural things that we didn't adhere to that had been in place and worked for us.
"We need to be better than that."
