Despite a third-quarter surge that moved them within 11 points, the Hawks were unable to hold off a fast-finishing Port in the 15.10 (100) to 13.8 (86) result in front of a record-breaking 52,333 fans.
Oddly, Hawthorn won the inside 50 count 55 to 47
Angus Monfries did the most damage on the scoreboard, kicking four goals with gun midfielder Chad Wingard adding three.
Monfries was subbed off at three-quarter time with a leg strain.
Travis Boak was fantastic in the Power’s midfield, with 33 possessions, a goal and 10 clearances.
For Hawthorn, Jordan Lewis was enormous in trying to will his side over the line, collecting 37 possessions, nine clearances and two goals.
Kane Cornes was moved on to Lewis in the final term, in response to his endeavour that helped Hawthorn kick five unanswered goals in eight minutes to end the third term.
However, a pair of opening final term goals to Hamish Hartlett slowed Hawthorn’s fightback.
Mitch Hallahan answered for the Hawks minutes later but an immediate reply from Port’s Kane Mitchell made Hawthorn’s task too hard as time ticked on.
