Ahead of his 200th AFL match on Saturday night, hawthornfc.com.au takes a look back at the career of Jarryd Roughead to date.

2004 - Draft Year

After an ominous TAC Cup campaign for Gippsland Power, Roughead led his local side Leongatha to a WGLFL premiership before being taken with the 2^nd overall selection in the 2004 National Draft.

He was drafted alongside former teammate Lance Franklin (pick 5) and fellow Vice-captain Jordan Lewis (pick 7) and remains pivotal in the formation of Alastair Clarkson’s Hawks.

 

2005 - Debut

A raw 18 year-old, ‘Roughie’ booted two goals in his Round 3 debut before switching to defence in the back half of the year, showcasing his ability to play a variety of roles.

He played 16 games for the season and was rewarded with a Rising Star nomination for his 20 disposals and six rebound 50s in Round 19 against Brisbane.

 

 

2007 - Breakout Year

After playing primarily in the backline during his first two seasons with the Hawks, Roughead caught the attention of the competition in his third season, booting 40 goals from 22 games.  

His season highlights include a five-goal haul against Carlton in Round 12 and a three-goal outing against the Crows as the Hawks advanced to the Semi Final.

 

 

2008 – First Flag

At just 21 years of age, Roughead kicked 75 goals for the year - playing every game of the season.

He booted nine goals in his three finals, taking Hawthorn to its first flag in 17 years.

 

 

2009 – Blue Bag

Roughead kicked a career-best eight goals in the Hawks four-point win over Carlton in Round 6.

His 51 goals for the year were a shining light in a Hawks season decimated by injuries.

 

2011 – Great season ruined by injury

The 193cm utility was called upon to lead the ruck division due to consistent injuries to Max Bailey and the Hawks’ tall timber.

After demonstrating that he was more than capable of fulfilling the role, Roughead was struck down with an Achilles injury against Geelong in Round 12 that ended his season.

 

 

2012 – The return

A credit to his professionalism and off-field dedication, Roughead stormed through his rehabilitation to return in Round 2 of the home-and-away season.

Remarkably, he was still able to compete in the ruck, while also finishing the year with 41 goals to his name.

 

 

2013 – Coleman Medal-Premiership Quinella

With ruckman Max Bailey back in the side, Roughead was able to spend more time as a stay-at-home forward. 

He finished the year with 72 goals to take home his first Coleman medal and collecting his second premiership medal.

Also in 2013, he demonstrated his ability to not only play key position, he could also be used in the midfield.

 

 

 

2014 – Milestone Year

Roughead equaled his career-best goal tally with a bag of eight against West Coast in round 12.

Two games later, he booted three goals against Collingwood to become just the eighth player in the club’s history to kick 400 or more goals.
