Hawthorn were dealt a blow before the opening bounce of the Round 8 meeting with the Swans, with skipper Luke Hodge succumbing to a hamstring complaint.
Hodge was withdrawn from the side 90 minutes before the bounce but that wasn’t the end the pain for the Hawks on the night.
With Sam Mitchell and Brian Lake both already out injured, the Hawks lost Cyril Rioli early in the third quarter to a hamstring injury, while Josh Gibson struggled all night with what was later revealed as a pectoral injury that required reparative surgery and more than two months on the sidelines.
Compounding the mounting injury toll was the fact the Hawks were overrun by Sydney in the final term, eventually going down by 19 points to a more classy team on the night.
In the end, Hawthorn didn’t have the players to beat the experienced Swans, with Hodge, Mitchell, Lake, Rioli all missing and Gibson hampered by injury despite a gallant effort by youngsters such as Will Langford and Mitch Hallahan.
Former Hawk Lance Franklin was a factor all night and was in the end the difference by kicking two final quarter goals to steer the Swans to victory.
Franklin (two goals) and Kurt Tippett (four) booted six goals between them, finishing off the great play by midfielders Dan Hannebery who was best on ground with 40 disposals, Josh Kennedy (36) and Kieren Jack (29).
The Hawks did well to stay in the game, fighting back from an early game deficit of 18 points to trail by just seven points at the main break but in the end they were overwhelmed by Sydney’s pressure.
The Swans laid a massive 85 tackles for the game, compared to just 54 from the Hawks, which led to them controlling possession with 393 disposals to Hawthorn’s 371 and 65 inside 50s to 48.
For the Hawks, Shaun Burgoyne was prevalent with 28 disposals and six clearances, while Jarryd Roughead was best with three goals and six tackles.
Luke Breust was also dangerous with three goals, while Jordan Lewis was again Hawthorn’s best at the stoppages with a team-high nine clearances.

Hawthorn’s Alastair Clarkson: "We were pretty ordinary tonight and Sydney were a lot more fanatical at the contest than what we were."We were lucky to still be in the contest at quarter-time.
"Sydney were the better side on the night by far."
Sydney’s John Longmire: “When we beat Fremantle that our pressure was back, and once we get that element of our game right, it helps us play the sort of footy we want to play.
"You've got to apply pressure to any team, but especially Hawthorn.
"If they get their uncontested game going, they're as good as any team in the competition at hitting targets."
