HAWTHORN players Brent Guerra and Isaac Smith will play their 150th and 50th matches for the Hawks is selected for Friday night’s clash against the Eagles.
Having played at both Port Adelaide (65 games) and St Kilda (31), Guerra made a name for himself in the AFL as a defender with elite skills during his career with both clubs, but has forged a reputation as a hard man, a dour and reliable defender with elite skills at the Hawks.
His third club, Guerra was drafted to Hawthorn with pick 3 in the 2006 AFL Pre-Season Draft and soon became a key figure in Hawthorn’s back six.
He was part of Coach Alastair Clarkson’s plan to recruit players with elite skills to the Club, a strategy that eventually helped in win the 2008 premiership, a side in which Guerra was part.
Guerra has found a home at Hawthorn after being traded by the Power then cut by the Saints at the end of the 2006 season, now ready to play his 150th game in the brown and gold to bring his games tally to 245.
Isaac Smith was drafted with selection 19 in the 2010 National Draft after an excellent season with North Ballarat in the VFL.
Smith made a name for himself in Victoria’s state league with his pace, running capacity and ability o break games open.
He was drafted by the Hawks at the age of 21.
He made his debut for the Hawks in Round 7, 2011 and made an immediate impact by gathering 21 disposals, six marks and six inside 50s and showcasing the run and carry that made him stand out in the draft.
Smith played 16 games in his debut season, including Hawthorn’s three finals matches before playing 22 matches in 2012, only missing three games through injury.
He has played in every game so far this season and has re-captured the spark that made him one of the AFL’s most impressive debutants in 2011.
The 22 year old is an integral part of Hawthorn’s midfield this year, with Alastair Clarkson looking to inject pace into his squad, and Smith is one player who certainly provides a lot of x-factor through the middle of the ground with his explosive pace and ability to evade oncoming opponents.
