The Hawks have been bolstered for Sunday's match against Melbourne by the inclusions of senior players Grant Birchall and David Hale.

The pair didn't play against the Suns through injury but have been been named in an extended squad.

Birchall has been one of Hawthorn's best players this season, with his ability to rebound off half back an important part of Hawthorn's ability to counterattack.

He was a late withdrawal for last weekend's game with back soreness.

Hale missed the win over Gold Coast with a niggling ankle injury.

Jack Gunston is the only exclusion with a calf injury on Thursday night, with the squad of 25 to be cut to 22 on Friday night.

Last week's debutant Sam Grimley has been named on the extended interchange along with Shane Savage who was impressive for Box Hill on the weekend.

Savage gathered 33 disposals in Box Hill's win over North Ballarat and has been rewarded by being named in Hawthorn's 25-man squad.

Michael Osborne has also been named on the extended interchange after being omitted last weekend.
