Don’t be alarmed on Saturday when you’re watching the Hawks take on the Kangaroos at Etihad Stadium when you notice the number five missing from the two 50 metre arcs on the ground.

For the first time ever, the AFL will alter its ground markings to raise awareness for the TAC’s Wipe off 5 message.

AFL Chief Executive Andrew Demetriou said it’s important to show support to for the initiative, something the AFL hopes footy fans will take notice of during the round’s matches and take care on the roads.

“The AFL shares the TAC’s passion to wipe out low-level speeding on our roads and by removing the 5s at all of our grounds this weekend we are showing the community how seriously we take this issue,” Demetriou said.

“We hope the millions of footy fans who watch this weekend’s matches will see this symbol and think about slowing down next time they hit the roads.”

Approximately 100 people die in speed related accidents on Victorian roads each year.

TAC CEO Janet Dore said slowing down by just 5km/h can make a big difference to safety on our roads.

“When driving in a 60 km zone, every increase in speed of 5 km/h above the limit doubles your risk of crashing,” she said.

“We know that if every Victorian wiped off five kilometres and stuck to the speed limit, less people would die on our roads.”
