GEELONG star Corey Enright won’t play against Hawthorn in Friday night’s Preliminary Final.

There has been speculation on Monday and Tuesday that the Cats veteran could make an unlikely and unexpected return, but football manager Neil Balme ruled him out early on Wednesday.

He joins fellow star veteran Paul Chapman on the sidelines after he was suspended for rough conduct.

Enright injured the medial ligament in his knee against Fremantle two weeks ago and while his condition has improved, he won’t be available for selection this week.

"He's come in pretty well this week, but we won't be playing him this week," Balme told reporters at Simonds Stadium.

Enright is one of Geelong’s key players, with his run and carry out of defence pivotal given the Cats like to set up most of their attacks from half back.

He has had another outstanding season, which was recognised by his naming in the 2013 All Australian team on Monday night.

He has taken the fifth most marks in the AFL this year, averaging 7.2 per game along with22.8 disposals.

He averages 21.3 touches against the Hawks.
