HAWTHORN defender Brent Guerra will have to face a fitness test this week before being cleared to play in Saturday night’s Grand Final re-match.

Guerra injured his knee in the final quarter of Hawthorn’s thrilling 11-point victory over Adelaide at AAMI Stadium, and was carried from the field grimacing in pain.

While many feared the worst for the 30 year old given the string of anterior cruciate ligament injuries sustained both at Hawthorn and league-wide in recent weeks, Guerra returned to the field and played out the remainder of the match.

Head Fitness Coach, Andrew Russell said the defender jarred his knee and has experienced soreness in the knee early in the week.

“He jarred his knee in the last quarter and he’s had a little bit of soreness early in the week, he’s coming up okay but he’ll be a test to play this week,” Russell said.

Two players who could return this week are Jed Anderson and ruckman, Max Bailey.

Anderson has missed the past three matches with a hamstring injury, while Bailey was a late withdrawal from Hawthorn’s side at the weekend, despite travelling with the team to Adelaide.

Bailey had swelling in his knee, which has settled and has been declared fit to play against the Swans should he be selected on Thursday night.

Anderson too, is available for selection after overcoming the hamstring injury sustained in the Round 3 win over Collingwood.

“The swelling has settled down 100 per cent, his knee looks great. He’s available to play this week, he’s looking good,” Russell said of Bailey’s knee.

“Jed’s going really well, he’s had a great rehab (program).

“He’s available this week to play but Box Hill have a bye so if he doesn’t play AFL, he’ll have another week off.

“He’s in the mix to be picked for the AFL team.”

Russell also revealed defender Ryan Schoenmakers’ knee reconstruction was a success after the youngster underwent season-ending surgery on Tuesday.

The Club’s third ACL rupture this year, Schoenmakers injured his knee against Fremantle in Round 4 and will miss the remainder of the 2013 season.

With no other knee injury sustained with the ACL tear, Russell says the promising defender is in a good position to recover and can look forward to a long and successful AFL career.

“Schoey had surgery today, he had a hamstring graft and his knee looks really good,” he said.

“He’s basically got the ACL injury, we repair that, then he comes back and we go again.

“He hasn’t got any other associated knee damage, which is great for his long-term health.”
