HAWTHORN Captain Luke Hodge is free to play against West Coast after successfully fighting his rough conduct charge at the AFL Tribunal on Tuesday night.

The Club opted to challenge the reprimand handed down by the Match Review Panel on Monday for Hodge's collision with Carlton's Lachie Henderson on Friday night, risking a one-match sanction.

The Hawks successfully argued the inspirational skipper did not intend to bump Henderson, but rather avoid collision with teammate, Jarryd Roughead.

The hearing at the AFL Tribunal took just over an hour, but the jury needed only 15 minutes to find the Hawthorn Captain not guilty.

Hodge is now free to take on the Eagles at Etihad Stadium on Friday night and more importantly, have no carry-over points hanging over his head for the remainder of the season.

The Hawks Captain said after the hearing his intention was never to bump Henderson.

"We know my intent was not to bump, my intent was to get out of the road of 'Roughy' and there was a collision," he said.

"We were very, very confident that it wasn't a bump. That was our defence and I'm grateful that they (the jury) saw it the same way.

"With how fast the game is these days there is going to be contact at times, and as it turns out in [this case] there was and it was accidental.

"It is a contact sport and people do collide."

The incident was assessed on Monday as negligent conduct (one point), low impact (one point) and high contact (two points).

That is a total of four activation points, resulting in a classification of a level one offence, drawing 125 demerit points and a one-match sanction.

Given Hodge had no existing good or bad record, however, he could have accepted the early plea to reduce the penalty by 25 per cent to 93.75 points carry-over points and a reprimand, but instead opted to fight the charge on Tuesday night.
