Decked out in the Club’s new adidas travel uniforms, the two Launceston-based groups departed Melbourne Airport just after 4.30pm for Hawthorn’s 12th consecutive Australia Post AFL Community camp in Tasmania.
On arrival, both groups made their first trip out to Aurora Stadium for 2013, to attend functions hosted by the local Tassie community. Group A, led by Sam Mitchell and Jordan Lewis, mingled with members of the loyal Tassie Hawks Supporter Group and took part in a Q&A with Malcolm – Head of the Supporter Group. Mitchell told the crowd about his strong pre-season to date and how he is not slowing down with age.
“The Club measures the percentage of training you do over the pre-season and I’m right up there near the maximum amount of training,” he said.
New recruit Matt Spangher was a favourite among the crowd, posing for a number of photos and signing many autographs. He was warmly welcomed to Hawthorn by Malcolm and the rest of the group.
Across the field in the Aurora Stadium Function Room, Group B attended a Northern Hawks Netball Club event with the players and their families. The netballers made the most of the opportunity, getting as many photos as possible with the likes of Jarryd Roughead and Ryan Schoenmakers.
After a long day of training, travel and attending functions, the Launceston groups resorted back to the hotel for dinner and an early night in preparation for a full day of Community Camp activities tomorrow. Jack Gunston will take his group to the Royal Guide Dogs to meet a few of Tassie’s cutest guide dogs, Spangher and Sam Grimley will fly to Flinders Island for the day and Luke Breust will be among players who head to the Cancer Council to spend time with cancer patients.
Jordan Lewis and Ryan Schoenmakers were happy to be at Melbourne Airport, ready to fly to Tasmania for the Club's 2013 Australia Post Community Camp.
