The football career of retired Hawthorn ruckman Max Bailey is set to continue, though this time off the field.

The 2013 premiership ruckman accepted the role of development coach with Richmond Football Club on Thursday as he begins his new journey of molding the future of the AFL.

Bailey announced his retirement at the Club's best and fairest, the Peter Crimmins Medal last Saturday night and made an emotional farewell to the Club he loves.

He thanked the Club and its coaches, players and supporters as he said an emotional goodbye.

Bailey played just 43 matches in eight seasons at the Hawks in a career that was cruelled by injury. He endured three knee reconstructions in his time at the Club and also battled a wrist injury in 2012.

The Club wishes him all the best as he embarks on his new journey at the Tigers.
