Hawthorn Development Coach Andy Otten has provided an update on the players who played in the reserves scratch match against North Melbourne last week.
Catch up with how each player is tracking after two scratch matches over the past fortnight.
Harry Morrison
He came back with a great attitude, and his leadership and voice were great. Playing at half back and on the wing, he was able to get the ball in his hands and use it nicely.
Conor Nash
Unfortunately Nashy hurt his shoulder in the second quarter which impacted the rest of his game. He had worked hard to get up to play this game after injuring his knee at training a few weeks before.
Conor Glass
Glassy has defended really well in both games so far and, pleasing for him, his impact offensively was outstanding on the weekend. Played on the wing and halfback, he was able to hit the scoreboard with two goals and have a team-high eight marks.
Michael Hartley
Harts has had a great two games so far. He’s our defensive anchor, rarely getting beaten in 1v1 contests, and able to use his penetrating kick when the ball is in his hands. His voice and leadership are stand-outs, and he brings energy and enthusiasm every game, which all his teammates feed off.
Paul Puopolo
Poppy came back fresh and full of energy. He was unleashed as a midfielder and his workrate was very high. He finished with a team-high 24 touches, four clearances and five inside 50’s. His leadership was great all game, setting the example with his pressure and tackling all game.
Will Day
Will has had two very solid games now. He has adapted very quickly to the Hawthorn way of defending, creating multiple intercept possessions in both games.
Finn Maginness
Finn’s work rate is already at an elite level for a young midfielder. His craft work in stoppages is improving every game. He has used his speed nicely to impact the scoreboard, kicking three goals across the two games.
Josh Morris
Josh was outstanding in the first practice game against Richmond, having great impact with his tackling pressure and willingness to compete hard. He has kicked three goals across both games so far. Unfortunately he got hurt early in the second quarter and couldn’t finish out the game.
Dylan Moore
Moore had his first game back on the weekend after building his fitness over the last few weeks. He looked dangerous around goals, finishing with two for the game. His pressure was good and he had a relentless attitude all game.
Darren Minchington
Minch had his first game on the weekend after building up his fitness the past few weeks. He played midfield and forward, and had a great impact on the game. His ball use was the stand-out, starting many of our attacking moves. He finished with 20 touches and a goal.
Emerson Jeka
Jeka is improving every game he plays. He moves very well for a tall key forward, taking some great marks on the lead with strong hands. He competes for the ball and crashes packs. He finished with two goals for the game, which was good reward for effort.
Harry Pepper
Pepper had a great game last week, he was very clean and his ball use was great. This week he played his role down back and defended strongly.
Ned Reeves
Reevsey has been developing nicely in the first two hit-outs. He has come up against some quality ruckman, and we can see the improvements we are after in Ned. He competed really well on the weekend, and his follow up work was outstanding, having a team-high five tackles.
Damon Greaves
Greaves has had two very solid games so far. Has had a great balance of attack and defence, playing a combination of wing and half-back. His ball use has been very solid, looking to create with his handball receives. He has averaged 18 touches per game so far.
James Cousins
Cuzzy was one of our better players who stood out with his ball use and ability to break away from the stoppage on the weekend. He has been a ball magnet, having 31 touches in the first game, and 21 and a goal in the second game. He was able to have six inside 50’s and five rebound 50’s showing his strong work rate.
Keegan Brooksby
Big Keegan has had two solid games so far. He is still new to the system and still learning about his teammates. He has played ruck and up forward, kicking three goals across both games so far. His ruckwork has been strong, and his leadership on the field a key feature.
Harry Jones
Was our stand-out player against Richmond, having 39 touches and 16 clearances. He was emergency on the weekend for the seniors, and is ready to play when he gets his chance. His burst from stoppage has been a highlight, and his ball use has been very good.
