Hawthorn Football Club would like to extend its congratulations to former Assistant Coach Leon Cameron on his appointment as Senior Assistant Coach at Greater Western Sydney GIANTS.

After two years at Hawthorn, Cameron departs having expressed a desire to be released from his contract to pursue a senior coaching role, which the Club supported.

In farewelling Cameron, Senior Coach Alastair Clarkson wished him well and thanked him for his time at the Club.

“Having served nine years as an assistant coach, Leon’s breadth of experience and great understanding of the modern game have him well-placed for the transition into senior coaching,” Clarkson said.

“His coaching credentials are impressive, and I have no doubt he will make a first-rate senior coach when he succeeds Kevin Sheedy at the end of 2013,” he said.

"I would like to thank him for his contribution to Hawthorn Football Club and wish Leon and his wife Carolyn, and children Amelia, Harry and Jack well," added Clarkson.

Cameron began at the Hawks at the end of 2010, having served as an Assistant Coach at Western Bulldogs for seven years following an impressive playing career at the top level.

He had a playing career which spanned 256 games across two clubs. He played for the Western Bulldogs between 1990 and 1999 (172 games, 68 goals) before being traded to Richmond (84 games, 40 goals) where he played a further four seasons (2000-2003). He won the Bulldogs’ best and fairest in 1993.
