Ruck option Paul Johnson been selected from the Hawthorn Football Club training list, ahead of Travis Tuck and Nathan Ahmat-Watkins, to fill the final rookie spot.

The decision was a football-based decision, with a greater need for the list to have an extra taller player for the 2011 season.

Johnson, formerly of Melbourne and West Coast, was delisted at the end of 2010 by the Demons, and provides additional height to the Hawks’ squad.

Riley Milne has been selected as the Club's nominated rookie for season 2011. The mobile tall defender impressed over the first two matches of the pre-season and will now be available for senior selection.

Tuck, who is currently serving a 12 match suspension from the AFL since recording a third-strike under the game’s illicit drugs policy, has received continued support and counselling since August from the Club and the AFLPA.

While Tuck will not remain on the Hawks’ playing list, Hawthorn General Manager Football Operations, Mark Evans, has said the Club will continue to offer support to Travis as he seeks to establish his employment, footballing, study and life options outside of the AFL.

“Firstly and most importantly, Travis is in a far better place than he was in August 2010,” said Evans.

“He has continued to make excellent progress under the care of his treating physician and with the understanding of his family, friends, the Football Club and the wider community.

“We will continue to provide support for Travis as he transitions into the next phase of his working and football life.

“The Club has offered to support Travis should he wish to play at Box Hill, but will equally understand that Travis may prefer to commence playing football outside of the Hawthorn-Box Hill system.

“The Club has also offered to continue to provide fitness, medical and counselling services for Travis during the remainder of his period of suspension and into the season of football.

“The Club will continue to work with AFLPA, Travis and his manager to make sure he makes the decisions that are right for him with employment, study, football and his general health and well-being.”

Tuck remained positive and upbeat following being informed that he would not be selected to fill the final rookie spot on the Hawks playing list this season.

“I need some time to assess my playing and employment options over the next couple of weeks,” said Tuck.

“I’d like to thank the Hawthorn Football Club, my family and friends for their support and the opportunity to get things back on track.

“My aim is to play at the highest possible level outside of the AFL. I am training hard and I will be ready to go after Round 6.”
