Six more significant guernseys on display
Guernseys worn by former Hawthorn stars Dean Anderson, Gary Buckenara, Andrew Collins, Alan Martello, Peter Russo and Roy Simmonds...
The Hawks Museum has a collection of significant guernseys now considered one of the largest in the AFL.
Within the collection are guersneys worn by captains, premiership players, best and fairest winners, Brownlow medallists and fellow teammates who in their time were indentified as the face of the brown and gold.
One of the highlights for visitors is the number of guernseys in the collection - with more than 80 at any one time on display.
Aside from the traditional vertical stripes and the earlier Mayblooms design, the night and pre-season variations now known as clash guernseys are also in the collection.
Peter Hudson’s Tasmanian guernsey and Chris Langford’s guernsey worn in the merge match are very popular.
The Club guernsey chronology that hangs from the ceiling always raises an eyebrow when visitors new to the Club’s folklore learn that in Hawthorn's first season (1902), players wore a dark blue guernsey with red and white braces.
The dreaded red and black colours of the Essendon Football Club that followed when Hawthorn merged with Boorandara in 1905 puzzles many a visitor, leaving them in disbelief.
By 1912, Hawthorn had another change to the colours (gold and blue), the official colours of the local Hawthorn municipality. When the Club joined the VFA in 1914 though, the Club's present day colours (brown and gold) were adopted.
There are two cabinets devoted exclusively to the significant guernsey collection, and the Hawks Museum is pleased to announce that the following six players have now been included:
