It was an impressive performance by the Hawks, who booted eight goals in a stunning second term to take a 15-point lead into the half time break.
The Magpies were inaccurate throughout the match, booting seven behinds in the opening term to finish the game with 16 goals 19.
The Hawks led for the majority of the game, but the Magpies hit back in the third and fourth quarters to eventually snatch the lead in the opening minutes of the final term.
The Magpies showed the “never say die” spirit that the football world was accustomed to as a single handed effort from Travis Cloke ended in goal to Dale Thomas to give the Pies the lead.
Not to be denied, however, the Hawks sparked into action, booting five of the last six goals to march to the Club’s first win of the 2012 season.
Sam Mitchell was one of the Hawthorn’s best in the middle, gathering 32 disposals and a whopping 11 clearances for the game.
Lance Franklin was dominant up forward, gathering 21 disposals and booted five goals to match the Hawks to victory.
The pace of Isaac Smith through the middle was a key factor for the Hawks, as the speedy wingman dashed his way to 17 disposals at 73 per cent efficiency.
The Hawks also played three debutants for the Club, with Jack Gunston, Jarrad Boumann and Broc McCauley all making their first appearance in the brown and gold.
McCauley was particularly impressive, nullifying the impact of Collingwood ruckman Darren Jolly on his way to 14 disposals and 21 hit outs.
What the coaches said:
Hawthorn’s Alastair Clarkson - “The momentum swings just ebbed and flowed all night, and we were really pleased that we were able to gather the momentum in the last part of the game. It was a real arm wrestle.”
Collingwood’s Nathan Buckley - “In the end, our 22 players weren't able to cover for each other and play the way we wanted to play and get the game on our terms as often as Hawthorn were, and that's why the scoreboard says what it says.”
