Recent success a factor: Lewis
Hawthorn midfielder Jordan Lewis says the club's successful 2008 finals campaign should hold it in good stead for this year's finals series
The Hawks have sewn up a top-eight position and Lewis says the experience of winning the 2008 premiership will give them an advantage over their competitors.
“We’re one of two sides that have been all the way who are in the finals series this year and we definitely know what it takes to make it to the last day in September,” Lewis said on Monday morning.
“We didn’t make finals this year and our hunger is back. We’ve got our chance this year and hopefully we don’t let ourselves down.”
The Hawks’ confidence is riding sky high after Saturday’s 116-point thrashing of a half-strength Fremantle.
It was a similar lead-up to one played last year when St Kilda rested seven of its best players against the Hawks at Aurora Stadium.
The Saints still came out on top that day and Lewis said that experience was at the forefront of Hawthorn’s mindset on Saturday.
“It was one of those games on the weekend where you can relax knowing the guys who were out and to our credit we didn’t do that. From start to finish we controlled the game and came out on top,” he said.
Luke Hodge (knee) and Grant Birchall (hamstring) are Hawthorn’s main injury concerns ahead of this week’s clash with Collingwood.
While still early in the week, Lewis said it was likely that Hodge would play while Birchall would have to sit it out.
“I haven’t spoken to Hodgey yet but he had scans this morning and I think they’ll reassess him today and see where he’s at," Lewis said.
"It would be great to see him and Swan play on each other this weekend. The two premier midfielders of the competition, I think he’ll get up and play.
“I think he (Birchall) will have scans today and that will reveal the extent of his injury. He won’t play this weekend so hopefully he will play next weekend against whoever we come up against.”
