HAWTHORN midfielder Brad Sewell believes his onball teammate Sam Mitchell is having his best season ever.

Mitchell won plaudits for another outstanding game in Launceston on Sunday as the Hawks beat North Melbourne by 17 points in wild weather conditions.

The former captain racked up 31 disposals, 17 of those contested, against an opponent renowned for his hardness at the contest.

Despite a decorated career that includes a NAB Rising Star award, two club best and fairests and a premiership, Mitchell is yet to earn All Australian selection.

But his performances in 2011 will make him hard to overlook: from 17 games, the 28-year-old has averaged over 31.5 disposals per match, with 12 hauls of 30 or more possessions.

"His (Mitchell's) consistency has been phenomenal," Sewell said from Hawthorn recovery at Brighton Sea Baths on Monday.

"I still can't work out how he finds so much of the ball, but he does, and he uses it so well.

"He sets up players and brings everyone around him into the game.

"So consistency-wise I think it has been his best year."

Sewell has been in fine form himself, amassing three straight games of 25 touches or more since returning from a three-week knee injury in round 18.

The 27-year-old said his body was feeling good heading into the last month of the home and away season.

"It (the knee) has been no worries, I haven't noticed it at all," Sewell said.

"It was a nice little break, freshen up, and no ill-effects to date."

But the 2008 premiership player did admit that the horrendous conditions at Aurora Stadium, which made for a fierce in-and-under contest, had taken their toll.

"It was a combative type of game, particularly in those sort of elements," Sewell said.

"There were lots of contests (and) North over the last month or two months, their contested ball has been really big for them, and it was important that we matched them in that yesterday."
