Hawthorn has secured former Geelong rookie Jonathan Simpkin during the AFL Delisted Free Agency Period.

Making his debut for the Cats in Round 9, 2012 the onballer played four games this year, including Geelong’s Elimination Final against Fremantle.

Hawthorn’s Recruiting and List Manager Graham Wright said Simpkin is a good pick-up for the Club.

“Jonathan has just turned 25 and had an outstanding finals series for the Geelong VFL team, which were eventual premiers,” he said.

“He has good speed and endurance, and will add to our midfield depth,” Wright said.

Recruited from Geelong Falcons, Simpkin was picked up by the Swans in the first round of the 2006 Rookie Draft and elevated to the club’s senior list that year. After being delisted at the end of 2007, Simpkin returned to play football with his home town of Colac in the Geelong Football League.

He spent three years with Geelong’s VFL side, and was selected by Geelong Cats (AFL) in the 2011 Rookie Draft. Simpkin played 19 reserves games in 2012, including the Cats’ grand final win over Port Melbourne, and won back-to-back best and fairest awards at VFL level (2011 and 2012).
