No risk on Rioli
The severity of Cyril Rioli's shoulder injury is likely to be known on Monday afternoon
THE EXTENT of Cyril Rioli's shoulder injury is expected to be known on Monday afternoon, Hawthorn football manager Mark Evans says.
Meanwhile, the Hawks will also take no risks with key defender Josh Gibson (ankle) and Lance Franklin (hamstring) for their twilight game against Gold Coast at the MCG on Sunday.
Rioli was subbed off at half-time during the Hawks' 12-goal win over Port Adelaide in Launceston on Sunday.
"The shoulder was a little bit sore," Evans told SEN on Monday morning.
"We decided not to risk it for the rest of the game, so we'll get that checked out today I'd imagine.
"It was a little bit freer as we were travelling home last night but was struggling to lift his shoulder at the time."
Late in the first quarter, Rioli was also felled in an off-the-ball incident that incensed his Hawthorn teammates, who immediately remonstrated with Port's Hamish Hartlett.
Evans said the Hawks wouldn't pursue the matter.
"That's footy. They come and go, those sorts of things and I don't think Cyril's too worried about it," he said.
Gibson was on crutches after the game after tweaking his right ankle just before half-time. He returned in the third term before being taken off in the last quarter.
"Same sort of thing [as with Rioli] - we decided not to take the risk with Josh," Evans said.
"It was good for him to get back out there. He's rolled his ankle on someone else's foot, I think, and managed to play but you could see him sort of start to stiffen up again in that last quarter so we wrapped him up."
The Hawks remain hopeful of a Franklin return against the Suns.
"He trained early last week and trained really well and we thought he was a monty to play, but come the end of the week he just said he wasn't quite right at 100 per cent," he said.
"If he trains like that again this week and then says he's right at 100 per cent, then he plays."
Midfielder Jordan Lewis was also confident Franklin would come up.
"I think they're just being pretty cautious with him, but I think you'll see him back out there this week," Lewis said before the Hawks' recovery session at Brighton Sea Baths on Monday morning.
Evans also rejected talk that Franklin's layoff - now stretching to five matches - had been the result of him aggravating the hamstring.
"It is a hamstring, and there's nothing new about it. He hasn't redone it, despite all the speculation out there," he said.
"But sometimes that happens when the bleed is either close to a tendon or a nerve - it just takes a little longer."
Lewis said Jarryd Roughead could be expected to come back in to face the Suns after resting a niggling ankle problem on Sunday.
The Hawthorn vice-captain said the injury clouds around key players approaching the finals were not a concern.
"As we've seen over the past five weeks, Buddy, arguably our best player, has been out, but we've managed to fill that role," Lewis said.
"We've got complete confidence that whoever comes into the side is going to play their role, and we don't ask for anything more of any of our players."
