HAWTHORN expects midfielders Clinton Young and Liam Shiels to be available for selection this weekend, despite suffering minor injury complaints in the loss to the Tigers on Saturday.

Shiels was subbed out of the 62-point loss at three-quarter-time with what appeared to be a quadriceps injury.

Hawthorn General Manager - Football Operations Mark Evans says though, that the Club expects Shiels to be available for this weekend’s match against North Melbourne at Aurora Stadium.

“He copped a corky to the side of his leg,” Evans said.

“But he’ll be fine I would think.”

After playing one of his best games for the Hawks against the Dockers two weeks ago, Young has once again become a vital part of the Hawks’ line-up.

The injury-plagued midfielder got a knock to the knee in the latter stages of the loss to the Tigers, but Evans said that the left-footer should be available for selection after completing a training session on Tuesday.

“He did limp off the ground, but he’s not too bad,” he said.

“He just banged it on the ground and I think there might have been another player that kneed him into the knee.

“He’ll be okay, he had a light training session (on Monday), but trained pretty much fully (on Tuesday).”

Ruckman Max Bailey has missed the opening nine matches of the home-and-away season after suffering a wrist injury on the eve of Round 1, but Evans says the Club does not expect him to be back before the Hawks’ bye in Round 13.

“He certainly won’t be back before the bye,” he said.

“He sees the surgeon in a couple of weeks and hopefully he gets full tick off from there.

“Once he gets that tick off, then he builds back up into training drills and plays when he’s ready.”

Recruit Jack Gunston starred for the Club’s VFL affiliate Box Hill in their Round 9 win over Casey, booting seven goals in a dominant display.

Evans credited an increased training schedule, coupled with a rest on match-day for his ability to perform.

“We rested him for a little while and gave him a training block and he has bounced back really well,” he said.

“It’s great to see young players pushing back in, and hopefully he gets back in sooner rather than later.”
