CLINTON Young and Broc McCauley sent Hawthorn selectors a timely reminder of their talents, starring in Box Hill's 36-point win over Frankston on Saturday.

In torrential rain, the Hawks struggled to shake a determined Frankston side in the opening half, before the Hawthorn-listed pair broke the game open in the third term.

Young showcased his linebreaking ability to feed the former Brisbane Lion for goals twice in the second half, shrugging off a Dolphins side that had limited the hosts to just three goals in the opening two quarters.

Their work saw Box Hill ice the game early in the fourth, squaring the Hawks' ledger at 3-3 after the first seven rounds.

Coach Damian Carroll was full of praise for McCauley and Young, but said the efforts of the club's VFL players were also promising.

"It's a great result, but I don't think the margin really did justice to how the game was played," Carroll said.

"We really got value for money in that second half after struggling in the first. All the stats were very even, but we thought our entries got better as the day went on and out them under pressure."

The game marked the return of former Box Hill players Dylan Van Unen, Leigh Kitchin and Jackson Sketcher to City Oval in their first season at Frankston.

But it was Hawthorn defender Stephen Gilham, entrusted with the most important job on the field, sent to stand side-by-side with Khan Haretuku.

In the opening quarter the duo saw very little of the ball though, as both midfield groups struggled to penetrate their forward 50.

The opening goal of the game took 18 minutes, when an opportunistic snap from mid-sized forward Daniel Corp gave Frankston the ascendancy.

The goal did little to open the game up, with Box Hill going to the first break without registering a goal. The Hawk's first major came early in the second, when Chance Bateman swooped on a loose ball and kicked truly.

Two more goals in the term ensured Box Hill took the lead into half time, but only after Kitchin asserted himself on the contest with a classy finish the City Oval faithful had been accustomed to over the past few years.

The Young and McCauley show ensued in the third quarter, with the pair driving Box Hill to a 24-point three-quarter time lead that was never going to be overhauled.

McCauley's third, coupled with a major from Derick Wanganeen took the margin beyond 40 in the last quarter before Corp's second added respectability to the scoreboard.

After a quiet game in last week's loss to Coburg, Tom Schneider pushed his case for a rookie upgrade with 38 disposals and 10 clearances to also be one of Box Hill's best.

Carroll said his side would need to lift another gear to challenge Casey next week, paying credit to Frankston's fighting quality.

Hawthorn-listed Players

Tom Schneide
r: Clearly in the Hawk's best three players. His work in the clinches was second to none and could be just what Hawthorn's midfield is after if he can earn a rookie upgrade.

Clinton Young
: Admitted after the game his form was down when he played for Hawthorn last month, but if he can continue Saturday's form Young should be in line for a senior recall.

Kyle Cheney: Has looked a class above in every game this year for Box Hill. Gathered 22 touches across half-back, but was rarely beaten in the air and on the ground.

Brad Hill: Posed a constant threat in the front half of the ground, finishing with 21 disposals.

Cameron Bruce: Bruce's experience continues to show through at VFL level. His sure handling was important in the wet.

Tom Murphy: Another solid performance from Murphy, who must be close to an opportunity with Hawthorn. Copped what appeared to be a heavy knock, but soldiered on to win the footy 17 times.

Chance Bateman: Had the football just 16 times, but did not miss a target by hand or foot. His ability to be precise on a difficult day for pinpointing targets was a feature.

Taylor Duryea: Duryea continues to grow as one of the important small defenders in the Box Hill side and was rarely beaten again.

Stephen Gilham: Had the key job on Frankston's leading goalkicker Khan Haretuku, but limited the key forward to just one goal. The Box Hill side always looks more assured with Gilham in the 22.

Derick Wanganeen: Had limited opportunities in the wet conditions, but managed to snag a final quarter goal.

Luke Lowden: Lowden is one player that continues to impress Box Hill coach Damian Carroll. The big ruckman had 20 hitouts, also posing a threat when forward.

Broc McCauley: Hawthorn appear to have found a gem with McCauley as a second or third ruckman on their list. He was the dominant big man on the ground with 34 hitouts and three goals.

Amos Frank: In conditions Amos would have rarely seen back home, he found the going tough. Will be better off for the experience of playing in a downpour.

Angus Litherland: Just four touches across half-back for Litherland this week, but he oozed the courage defenders require in the wet.
